As many of you know, Kurt Hubner has been battling Stage 4 colon cancer for the past 5 years. He was initially diagnosed in October, 2006 at the age of 31. Upon completion of chemotherapy in May, 2007, his doctor said he was in remission. He returned to work at UPS until February, 2008 when the cancer recurred to both lobes of his liver. At that time, his Decatur cancer doctor told him that he had 6 months to 2 years to live. That was unacceptable to Kurt and an indication that he needed to find another cancer doctor who would battle his illness along with him, which led him to Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Zion, Illinois. After extensive chemotherapy treatments there, it became apparent that remission would not be possible until he had a liver resection. God led us to Dr. Tsung at University of Pittsburgh who was willing to operate and remove 70-75% of his liver in June, 2010. Kurt recovered from the surgery and we then felt God leading us in another direction for cancer treatment, Block Medical Center in Skokie, Illinois. They use a holistic approach which includes chemotherapy, supplements, diet, spiritual, mind and body, etc. Since that time the cancer has continued to spread further into both of his lungs, chest wall, and spine. Kurt has courageously fought his illness and endured great suffering in the process. Regardless, throughout this 5-year period Kurt has remained faithful to his belief in God witnessing the cause of Christ at every opportunity and growing spiritually. Kurt believes in his heart that he could be used by God in a mighty way if his health is restored and he longs to minister to others about the power of God. He has maintained an extremely positive attitude and continues to look forward to life with his wife, Shellie, and his two children, Hallie (10 yrs. old) and Kody (8 yrs. old). He is an inspiration to those who know him.
The reason for this blog it to inform you of the ways that you can join us in fervent prayer to petition God for Kurt's healing. A 40-Day Prayer Vigil will begin on Friday, December 12 at 12:00 a.m. thru January 20th at 12:00a.m. During these 40 days, Ww will be asking you to commit to 15 minutes of prayer, in which you would keep that 15 minute segment throughout the whole 40 days. However before we start the 40 days of prayer, we will be kicking it all off with a "72 Hour Around the Clock Prayer Vigil" on Friday, December 9th starting at 12:00a.m. until Sunday December 11th ending at 12:00a.m. we will be asking for people like yourself to sign up for 30-minute segments and be willing to commit to pray solely for Kurt during that period of time.
You can check out the Google Calendar above entitled "Kurt's Calendar" and see what spots are open for both the "72 Hour Around the Clock Prayer Vigil" and the "40 Days of Prayer." If a name is not attached to a time segment, then you can consider that segment to be unclaimed and open. I would ask that you sign up to pray by either leaving a comment below this post, stating your name, the event in which you will joing us...(hopefully both) your designated 30 or 15 minute prayer commitment and I will add it to the google calendar. If you cant leave a comment for feel free to email the same information I just mentioned to kurtscalendar@decaturchristian.net
If the time segment for prayer is already filled up and you are not able to prayer during an open slot, feel free to double up on a spot that is already taken...it can only strengthen that time slot. We hope to see Kurt healed but know 100% that he will be blessed along with the many people who will commit to pray during this time of need.
Stay a Blessing,
Pastor Joe Drew
